Instruments were developed in the 18th century and there were various types of brass and wind bands. In the 19th century clarinets, oboes, bassoons, and drums were in the bands. One style of instrument is the over-the-shoulder (OTS) Sax-horn, the point of the horn was that the troops behind the band could hear the music. The Boston Brass Band, American Brass Band, and Salem Brass Band are a few examples of Brass Bands. There were a few bands that were US Military Bands, and state militias, and when state and local militias were brought into service they would usually bring along their bands. These bands played a significant role in the life of soldiers, they were the joy of their unit. These bands helped soldiers during the war, they would play for ceremonies and civic functions. They also entertained them and provided the music for balls and dances. General Robert E. Lee stated “I don’t believe we can have an army without music,”
